I learned this stuff really early in my sim racing time, and a lot of my early wins where just because I was consistent and didn't crash. I was more than a few seconds slower than the WR lap, but I was always within half a second of my PB, it just slowly crept up as I learned. I very rarely crashed out, because I knew pushing that hard wasn't worth it. I haven't done online sim racing in more than five years, but I really want to get back into it. Under maintenance. I remember practicing like this in rfactor 1 and then suddenly switching to a race, experiencing the terror of having AI next to me. All of a sudden it was a whole different game. Laps alone are only good for learning the course and the max speeds in curves. Even then it is good to always have some AI cars driving around, like qualifying and try to make it to the number of laps and pit stops of an actual race. I like hotlapping, sue me. And sometimes I'll be in the mood to race, and a few practice/qualy laps later, I'm pretty much up to speed. And with VR, the sheer enjoyment of driving around and perfecting the flow and rhythm is fun on it's own. Over the years, I have spent some time with sim racing games on consoles, including GT5, GT6, Drive Club, the Crew, Project Cars, Dirt Rally, and now with Assetto Corsa, which I shall refer to as A/C. When I practice for races, Especially in the IndyCar Fixed series. I'm practicing to see how the car will feel after a few laps. I'll go all out for maybe a lap or two to see how I compare to other people in the session, but after I set a fast lap I really don't pay much attention to the leaderboard after that. I also like to practice my pit in and pit out procedures in case of green flag pit stops during the race, especially on tracks with tight pit roads or pit roads that I'm not fully familiar with. It also never hurts to run the car out of fuel in practice to gauge the fuel mileage of the car in Series that require pit stops, if you're too lazy to install a fuel mileage calculator like me lol.
